Eleen Halvorsen
Eleen Halvorsen is a Norwegian-born, New York-based artist working across different mediums including sculpture, painting, leatherwork and garment design.
Through her multidisciplinary practice, Halvorsen explores themes of identity, self-expression, sexuality, and the expectations placed upon the female body.
Her sculptures and large-scale oil paintings, hovering between abstraction and figuration, examine the psychological and emotional relationship we have with our bodies. Working with materials such as concrete, steel, and leather, she shapes intimate bodily forms imbued with underlying sexual tension, creating works that balance on the edge of fetishism. Halvorsen describes her process as one of deliberate opposition, an interplay between control and surrender, sensuality and restraint. “There has to be a certain tension in my work, whether it’s juxtaposing traditionally masculine construction materials with organic female forms or incorporating bondage elements into traditional tailoring. I’m drawn to the raw feminine, the point where beauty, discomfort, and desire converge.”
Born and raised in Norway, Eleen Halvorsen moved to New York to attend Parsons The New School for Design, from where she graduated in 2012. In 2013 she launched her first conceptual garment collection. Halvorsen has achieved editorial and written coverage from top publications including: Interview Magazine, L'Officiel, Numero Tokyo, SCHON, Contributor Magazine, StyleZeitgeist, S Magazine and Huffington Post among others.
