Timothy Kin Cheng
Timothy Cheng is a multidisciplinary artist, stylist, and photographer based in New York City.
Working at the intersection of image-making and object-making, he constructs sculptural works from his own photographs, merging form, texture, and portraiture into a distinct visual language. His practice draws from his Korean and Chinese heritage, using beauty as an entry point to examine, subvert, and reimagine cultural expectations surrounding identity. Cheng’s work blurs the boundaries between photography and sculpture, using surreal, beauty-driven imagery to explore the emotional weight of Asian and universal beauty standards and the complexities of self-representation. Working fluidly between digital and film, he approaches each piece as both an intimate study and a broader commentary on visibility, body politics, and cultural inheritance. His ongoing collaborations with beauty industry creatives, inform a practice centered on transformation, embodiment, and the power of visual storytelling.
She’s on a break!
Photography, Printed on matte paper wood base
20 x 28”
“She’s on break!” captures a quiet, uncanny moment on the set of a wig and hair campaign for hairstylist Evanie Frausto. A lone mannequin head, still styled and camera-ready, rests on its stand beneath the studio lights, suspended between object and character. Stripped of the usual chaos of a working set, the scene becomes a portrait of absence, an in-between pause where the tools of beauty momentarily outshine the bodies they’re meant to adorn. The image highlights the surreal intimacy of backstage environments, revealing both the artifice and emotional resonance embedded in beauty work.
