Minimal Gallery presents an exhibition of tattooed silicone works by students of the first tattoo course in higher education at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD ).

The works on view - tattooed silicone skins, petri dishes and other synthetic objects, - stand as fully realized art objects while remaining grounded in the discipline of tattooing. These surfaces allow students to develop fluency in line, shading, composition, and machine control, while engaging tattooing beyond the limitations of the body. Removed from permanence and biography, the work opens space for experimentation, revision, and formal exploration central to the students ’ growth as artists. Silicone functions simultaneously as proxy, archive, and experimental ground.

Together, the students ’ works reflect tattooing in formation - where skill acquisition, historical awareness, and personal expression converge. The exhibition offers a glimpse into how a new generation of artists may shape the future of the medium through disciplined practice, informed experimentation, and distinct artistic voice.

“Tattooing at RISD isn’t just a class, it’s a signal. A signal that the art form is stepping into new arenas, expanding its reach, and reshaping how the world understands it. With Adam at the helm, tattooing is no longer confined to studios or subcultures; it’s entering a dialogue with design, academia, and the future of art itself.” — Tattd’s Blog
